Bags per cubic yard

How many bags of gravel are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard of gravel equals 54 bags of 0.5 ft³ each. That is 27 cubic feet total.

Check the volume on your bag's label. The count changes with bag size. No extra gravel for waste is included.

Calculate bags for your project

Bags per cubic yard by bag volume

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Divide that volume by the volume printed on your bag. These are comparison sizes; check which sizes your supplier sells. Material density does not change these volume-based counts.

Read the volume on the label

Look for cubic feet, cu ft, or ft³. A 0.5 ft³ bag contains half a cubic foot, regardless of what the stone weighs. If the label gives both volume and weight, use its declared volume for this conversion. A 50-lb bag is not automatically a 0.5 ft³ bag.

If the label gives only coverage, check its stated layer depth. Square feet measure area; cubic feet measure volume. Coverage at one depth cannot be used at a different depth without converting.

Volume label

Example gravel bag labeled 0.5 ft³. The label states volume.
0.5 ft³ per bag. 54 bags equal one cubic yard. No density estimate is needed.

Weight label

Example gravel bag labeled 50 lb. The label states weight, so a volume estimate needs density.
50 lb per bag. At 105 lb/ft³, buy 57 whole bags for one cubic yard. Use the declared volume if available.

Round up to whole bags

Bag equivalents = cubic yards × 27 ÷ cubic feet per bag. Keep the full result, then round up once for a purchase. The four sizes above divide one cubic yard exactly.

For a 0.8 ft³ bag, one cubic yard equals 33.75 bag volumes. Buy 34 whole bags, which contain 27.2 ft³. The extra 0.2 ft³ comes from rounding up; it is separate from a chosen waste allowance.

For waste, increase the required volume by your chosen percentage before dividing by bag volume and rounding up. If your calculator already includes waste, do not add it again.

Two cubic yards in 0.5 ft³ bags

  1. 2 yd³ × 27 ft³/yd³ = 54 ft³.
  2. 54 ft³ ÷ 0.5 ft³/bag = 108 bags.

Buy 108 bags of 0.5 ft³ for 2 cubic yards. No automatic extra percentage is included.

How many 50-lb bags make a cubic yard?

At an assumed pea gravel bulk density of 105 lb/ft³, one cubic yard weighs 2,835 lb and needs 57 whole bags of 50 lb. This estimate depends on density.

  1. 27 ft³ × 105 lb/ft³ = 2,835 lb.
  2. 2,835 lb ÷ 50 lb/bag = 56.70 bag equivalents.
  3. Round up to 57 whole bags of 50 lb.

Bulk density includes gaps between stones and varies with material, moisture, and packing. Use your supplier's density for a weight-only label. If the bag declares a volume, use that volume instead. Compare materials in the gravel weight per cubic yard guide.

Calculate bags for your area and depth

Use the pea gravel calculator to enter dimensions, depth, bag volume, and a chosen waste allowance. It rounds your total up to whole bags and compares bag and bulk costs. For other materials, use the gravel calculator.
